Dalgona Whipped Coffee

Dalgona Whipped Coffee

I admit, the Whipped Coffee, or Dalgona Whipped Coffee, caught my attention. I miss the coffeehouse vibe with social distancing in full effect, and this coffee promises fun and delivers. Dalgona Whipped Coffee recently gained popularity on social media, and many people are having fun making it and sharing the results online while they spend more time at home.

A few friends and I have shared messages about trying this, and honestly, I always want to go on a coffee adventure!

Once I made this, I realized friends of mine were excited to make it too, but they had a few questions. So, I decided to write a post on whipped coffee. It was not quite as simple as that though because we grind our own coffee beans, and the recipe requires instant coffee. Many things have been out of stock near us, but I did manage to get some instant coffee with our groceries.

What is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped coffee is the combination of instant coffee, sugar, and water whipped into a pillow-like foam that is served over iced, cold, or warm milk. The ingredient ratio is 1:1. Therefore, if you use 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, you will want to use 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of hot water.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

Measure out 2 tablespoons of instant coffee into a mixing bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of hot water. Using the mixer, whip the ingredients thoroughly and continuously until the color gradually lightens and soft peaks form. When the color of the liquid changes you may be tempted to stop whipping; however, for optimum results, it is important that you continue whipping until you see the peaks form and the liquid has thickened into a foam. This may take additional time and effort if you are whipping the ingredients by hand.

Is Instant Coffee Necessary?

Yes—for the most part. I tested this a few times with regular coffee, and I was unable to reproduce the same result. I did some digging, and it seems others have experienced the same thing. That said, it looks like some people have had success in brewing coffee, reducing it, and using the reduction, or coffee-like syrup, to make whipped coffee. I haven’t tried this method and as such, cannot recommend it at this time. Additionally, I think it involves a lengthy extra step (the reduction) with a possibility of burning the coffee. I would recommend using instant coffee for this recipe. If you have regular coffee you might consider making cold brew instead.

Best Tips for Making Whipped Coffee

My best tips for making whipped coffee:

  1. Use instant coffee, a flavor you already enjoy
  2. Adhere to the 1:1 ratio of ingredients
  3. Whip the ingredients until you see peaks form
  4. Consider adding cocoa powder or vanilla for an additional treat

Is Whipped Coffee Worth It?

Yes! I thought the Dalgona Whipped Coffee was good. If you like coffee you will enjoy this treat. That said, the whipping is an extra step, even with a mixer. It is not something I would make on a regular basis when I can easily make a regular cup of coffee or cold brew. However, the Dalgona Whipped Coffee has a coffeehouse vibe to it, and if you are looking to treat yourself, it is worth the extra step to create this drink. We really enjoyed it!

Selecting an Instant Coffee

For this recipe I used an instant, medium roast, 100% Arabica Colombian coffee. This created a whipped coffee with robust flavor. Select your instant coffee accordingly if you like a mild coffee flavor. I recommend using a brand and flavor of instant coffee that you already enjoy to ensure the whipped coffee is to your liking. If you do not drink instant coffee, then I recommend selecting a flavor that is similar to the type of coffee you regularly drink.

Scaling the Recipe

If you would like to make whipped coffee for more than one person or multiple servings you will want to adjust your ingredients accordingly. Again, the ingredient ratio is 1:1. I used 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of hot water, which yielded one nice serving. If you want to make this for two people, you would use 4 tablespoons of instant coffee, 4 tablespoons of sugar, and 4 tablespoons of hot water. As long as you keep the ratio of ingredients the same, you can scale the recipe according to your needs.

    • Thanks for reading! I have not tried this with Stevia, so I can’t recommend it at this time. However, I have seen examples of others using Stevia, and I think it’s possible that it may work, but it may not whip up as fluffy or taste the same without the granulated sugar. If you give it a try please let me know how it turns out!
